Songs that just butter my muffin.

Music is said to be the language of the soul, influencing our mood and our emotions at the drop of a dime. Some can be so impactful to us, that it can change who we are as people or leave a deep connection that never fades.

My taste in music contains little to no bias, and can contain almost any genre under the sun.

I’m sure there are many songs out there that will make you happy no matter how bad your day has been. So, considering I had a pretty poor day on this passing Wednesday, I will discuss some songs that never fail to cheer me up no matter my mood (in no particular order).

#1 Rock DJ, Feel, and Kids w/Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams

I’ve begun my deep dive into Robbie’s catalogue, and he doesn’t disappoint. His vocal range and pitch reach close to my own, making it quite effortless to sing along to these tunes in particular. Rock DJ packs a catchy beat with a positive rise to the chorus. The clean breath of fresh air from Feel is a somewhat cathartic one and the lyrics are interestingly deep, and his collab with Kylie Minogue on Kids is just a head banger all round (and the music video is questionably promiscuous).

#2 What a Fool Believes, The Doobie Brothers

I’ve proclaimed already on previous blogs my love for anything older than I, and anything that can be played on 90.2 The Sound is bound to make this list.

The light-hearted jovial beat in this classic is bubbly and soulful, and the singers hit a mean falsetto which seemed common for soft rock in the 70’s, and it really aids the brightness of it all. Great to play on a sunny day.

#3 BAE CITY ROLLAZ and Selfish High Heelz – Yung Bae

A whole lot more recent, Yung Bae specializes in Future Funk that is steadily growing in popularity. His sampling of J-Pop from the 80’s adds to the aesthetic with impunity. The powerful vocals and electronic flashes inject a venom in your body and legs that make you want to turn any floor into a dance floor like you’re raving in Neo-Tokyo.

#4 I only wanna be with you – Bae City Rollers

A coincidental exchange of names, this cover from the good old days gives a bopping tune a funky twist. The melody may be familiar to most, so it may be a relief to finally tie it to a song. The wholesome lyrics of affection to the potential recipient/listener are always sweet to sing along to, or to possibly sing to another.

#5 You Get what You Give – New Radicals

If you know this one, do I really need to explain this one much? The turn of the millennium gifted us with this uplifting classic of hope and never giving up. I’m sure songs like this have saved many from dark places, which I’m sure was the original intention. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

#6 Know Your Worth – Khalid

Set at one of the top artists in the world today, Khalid’s soft voice is like the cool side of the pillow. This mellow groove is light and soothing, with lyrics encouraging self-love and hope for loving another. The literal message of “gotta keep your head up”, makes for a great bridge from the chorus and the rhythm is perfect to walk to when your need to pick yourself up. “Find someone who loves you like you’re worth”.

#7 Nesian 101, Sun Goes Down, For The People and Nesian Style – Nesian Mystik

Fish and chips by the beach, weekend nights at the pub, cool summer nights under the streetlamps and school holidays on the horizon capture in my mind the flow and freshness of that Polynesian hip-hop that many groups like Nesian Mystik captured.

These four singles show the very best they have to offer and really lightened up the late 2000’s when sunny Christmas summers were on my horizon while at school.

#8 Get Away – Katchafire

This one song in particular pulls on a very specific heartstring of my childhood nostalgia that served as one of my first tastes of reggae.

The escapism it sends through its whimsical beats and moody lyrics that display a need to get away from it all, makes for good listening on the road or on a lonely walk.

I have many other songs to mention, but I’ll leave it there for now. What songs put a smile on your face everytime?

Thank you for reading and have a beautiful day!
