B-Boys, B-Girls, and Writing about Murder 13/03/2025

(Third week on Campus)

This week and last have been ones where I am not now nearly as lost around campus as the first week! With everyone now into the swing of things, the busy schedules of every bee are now flowing smoothly like well-oiled cogs.

As for me, things have rapidly grown very exciting in my Dance class. This week, we studied the origins, history and cultural evolution of Hip-Hop from its roots in 70’s New York. As such, I learned a great deal of the many misconceptions and misunderstandings surrounding the movement. Branching into a multi-disciplinary artform through music, dance, DJ and MC tech, and even fashion and graffiti, Hip-Hop is a positive and explosive artform that cultivates entire communities of breakers.

Since I had slowly developed in interest in listening to more of the music, I was excited to delve into it, and have learnt so much that I never knew or considered before. The discussion about breakdancing emerging as a sport or an Olympic event is an intriguing one, pondering if such a transformation negatively affects the true and original nature and soul of break and Hip-Hop at its core.

And to top that off, I’m glad that I was able to at least slightly keep up with the rest of my young class when we practiced the moves in our dance hall!

In Creative Writing, I’ve been very keen to delve into our current topic of Crime Fiction. Soon I’ll have to send in a 1000 opener to a “crime novel”. Thanks to my love for shows like “Columbo” and “Murder She Wrote” I’m as interested as any in this genre of fiction, which has had a recent resurgence in popularity. And after writing a manuscript that once swelled to 200,000 in size, 1000 doesn’t seem so scary.

It’s safe to say that, since I’m studying much of what I already have experience with, I’m hitting the ground running in an advantageous way that many other students may not have when going in blind. It will fun to chronicle where this journey will continue to take me!

Thank you for reading and have a beautiful day!
